Salon Hang at the
Art Gallery of Ontario, 2024

This Salon Hang for the AGO’s Art Rental and Sale Program, was inspired by the artist’s immigrant past, adopted from Korea and raised in Canada. Chatburn has travelled back to Asia several times in her adult life and was impacted by the rich culture, beauty and architecture of these countries. Painting from memories and snapshots of busy markets and streetscapes, the imagery connects with a place that is both familiar and distant.

Many of the paintings depict individuals, usually women in markets or daily life in Asia. Chaotic images represent a foreign place, at the same time showing glimpses of familiar signs or logos that make a place knowable. The emotional message is one of curiosity and discovery.
